How Much Tread Does a Commercial Truck Tire Need?

One of the simplest commercial tire checks is also one of the most important:
How much tread is left?
Tread depth plays a major role in traction, water evacuation, tire performance, and DOT compliance.
And the legal minimum is not the same for every wheel position.
What Is the Minimum Tread Depth for Commercial Truck Tires?
Under federal commercial vehicle regulations, tires on the front wheels of a truck or truck tractor must have at least:
4/32 inch of tread depth
Other tires must have at least:
2/32 inch of tread depth
That generally includes:
Drive tires
Trailer tires
Other non-front wheel positions
Tread depth is measured in a major tread groove.
2. Why Steer Tires Have a Higher Requirement
Steer tires directly affect the driver's ability to control the vehicle.
They play a major role in:
Steering
Braking
Wet-weather traction
Directional stability
That is one reason the minimum tread requirement for front tires is higher than for other wheel positions.
But fleets should remember:
The legal minimum should not automatically become the fleet's replacement target.
Depending on the application, weather, route, tire condition, and operating environment, a fleet may decide to remove a tire earlier.
3. Minimum Legal Does Not Mean Maximum Safety
A tire may still technically meet the minimum tread-depth requirement but have other problems that make it unsuitable for continued service.
Examples include:
Sidewall damage
Exposed cords
Bulges
Cuts
Tread separation
Severe irregular wear
Run-flat damage
Internal damage
That means tread depth should be part of the inspection—not the entire inspection.
4. How to Measure Commercial Tire Tread Depth
The proper tool is inexpensive:
A tread-depth gauge.
Place the gauge into a major tread groove and record the measurement.
For better information, measure several areas across the tire.
Why?
Because a tire may have:
8/32 in one area
5/32 in another
3/32 near one shoulder
That uneven wear tells you something important.
Do not measure only the best-looking part of the tire.
5. Watch for Uneven Tread Depth
If one part of the tire is wearing much faster than another, the tire may be telling you there is a larger problem.
Possible causes include:
Alignment
Improper inflation
Worn suspension
Steering-component wear
Wheel issues
Loading
Dual-tire mismatch
Replacing the tire without correcting the cause may result in the replacement wearing the same way.
6. Check Steer Tires Closely
A steer tire should receive extra attention during every inspection.
Look for:
Tread depth
Uneven wear
Cuts
Cracks
Bulges
Embedded objects
Exposed material
Proper inflation
If a steer tire is approaching the minimum tread requirement, the fleet should already be planning its replacement.
Do not wait for the DOT inspector to become your tire-management department.
7. Trailer Tires Matter Too
Trailer tires often work hard while receiving less attention than tractor tires.
A trailer tire with insufficient tread or serious damage can lead to:
Roadside failure
DOT violations
Delivery delays
Trailer damage
Emergency tire replacement
A good fleet program treats trailer tires with the same discipline as tractor tires.
8. Tread Depth and Wet Roads
As tread wears away, a tire has less depth available to move water away from the tire's contact area.
That matters during heavy rain.
North Texas can go from bone dry to an absolute biblical downpour in about fifteen minutes.
Commercial fleets should consider weather conditions when deciding how far they want to run tires toward minimum tread depth.
9. Measure Tread Before Long Trips
A good pre-trip or preventive-maintenance inspection should catch tires approaching replacement before the vehicle leaves the yard.
For fleet operations, this allows maintenance teams to:
Schedule replacement
Avoid emergency roadside service
Protect delivery schedules
Reduce driver downtime
Avoid preventable DOT problems
Replacing a tire in the fleet yard is usually a lot easier than replacing one on the shoulder of I-35.
10. Keep Tread Records
Larger fleets can gain useful information by tracking tread measurements over time.
For example:

If one tire loses tread dramatically faster than the others, the fleet can investigate before the tire is destroyed.

“Is the tire legal today?”
